BIM - Building Design Tutorial

Introduction:

On this tutorial you will learn the general SOFiSTiK BIM Workflow.

This tutorials files are for our customers with Software Service Contract only. You need the current SONAR login and password to get access to the files.

Opening a new SOFiSTiK project

  • Step 1.1 Open the System dialog : SOFiSTiK-> FEA Extension-> system dialog

  • Step 1.2 Define the project title

Note

We recommend to use a local directory for your project files to speed up communication between program and data base. Later on you can zip and save your project data on a company server

  • Step 1.3 Now select the code. First select the country flag and then the code. In case you like to use the pure Eurocode without any national annex use the European flag.

Warning

If you leave the “System Information” dialogue with “OK” the selected country code is fixed and saved inside the data base. You may NOT change the code later on.

Materials mapping

  • Step 2.1 Define the material mapping from Revit materials to SOFiSTiK materials SOFiSTiK-> FEA Extension->material mapping

Section mapping

  • Step 3.1 Define the section mapping from Revit sections to SOFiSTiK sections. SOFiSTiK-> FEA Extension-> section mapping

Action mapping

  • Step 4.1 Define the action mapping from Revit Load Natures to SOFiSTiK actions: SOFiSTiK-> FEA Extension-> action mapping

Loads

Note

SOFiSTiK calculates the self-weight of the elements automatically and stores it in the first load case, in order to have a separate load case for the self-weight we recommend to name the first load case “S.W” and leave it empty. Additional dead loads should be saved in other load cases.

  • Step 5.1 Define load cases: analyze-> load cases-> add load cases ->OK
  • Step 5.2 Draw point, line and area load cases according to your design and assign them to the corresponding load case
  • Step 5.3 Check the SOFiSTiK action mapping: SOFiSTiK-> FEA Extension-> action mapping.

Structural properties

  • Step 6.1 Define structural properties of beams, columns, slabs and walls on the SOFiSTiK structural properties window.

  • Step 6.2 Define beam effective width: -> select a beam -> define the desired effective width in the SOFiSTiK structural properties window

Export to SSD (SOFiSTiK Structural Desktop)

  • Step 7.1 define export properties and export: SOFiSTiK -> FEA extension-> Export-> OK

  • Step 7.2 open the SSD main system: SOFiSTiK -> FEA extension-> SSD main system ( 3D Model)

Create a 2D sub system

  • Step 8.1 Select the suitable view : Project browser->05 Analytical Model-> 3D Views->3D Analytical Model Subsystem

  • Step 8.2 Export a Sub System: SOFiSTiK -> FEA extension-> Export-> check the “mesh sub system and create boundary conditions” box -> OK

  • Step 8.3 Open SSD sub system: SOFiSTiK -> FEA extension-> SSD main system drop down menu-> your sub system

Note

From now on we will work with a - 2D sub system for analysis and design.

Analysis and design in SSD

  • Step 9.1 Open the task “Linear Analysis” (double click on it), check/change the properties, confirm the settings with OK and run the task.
  • Step 9.2 Open the task “Superpositioning” (double click on it), check/change the properties, confirm the settings with OK and run the task.
  • Step 9.3 Insert a new task: right click on the navigation panel-> insert task-> Design ULS Beams, confirm the settings with OK and run the task.

  • Step 9.4 Insert a new task: right click on the navigation panel-> insert task-> Design SLS Beams, confirm the settings with OK and run the task.
  • Step 9.5 Calculate all tasks: right click on the navigation panel-> calculate all

Reinforcement Generation (RCG)

  • Step 11.1 Open Revit-> Generate Reinforcement: SOFiSTiK Reinforcement -> reinforcement generation -> create-> select elements (beam, slab or a wall)-> OK

Reinforcement Detailing (RCD)

  • Step 12.1 Assign the view to a sheet.
  • Step 12.2 Select all bars and assign them to a sheet. SOFiSTiK reinforcement-> marks-> assign
  • Step 12.3 Set marks. SOFiSTiK reinforcement-> marks-> set marks.
  • Step 12.4 Tag all rebar’s. SOFiSTiK reinforcement-> tagging-> tag all
  • Step 12.5 Get the rebar shape detailed. SOFiSTiK reinforcement-> tagging-> shape detail.
