The Detail Layer tool tags a selected rebar with a detail family to indicate its layer. The default detail family “SOFiSTiK_Detail_Layer” provides two different styles to represent the rebar layer (Flag - and Slash Style). Additionally you can set symbols (e.g. for bar bent away from - and towards viewer) in the properties palette of the family.
